This year I’ve been reading a book called Hands Free Life by Rachel Macy Stafford. I am in love with this book and the message it is sharing. I catch myself shaking my head over and over as I flip each page. I’m so thankful this book came to my hands at this time of the year.
I’ve mentioned in a previous post about Tristan’s attitude lately. Shelby and I have been really concerned for him, and we want to try to change things at home to make it a positive place for him to be. We decided to take it “back to the basics” and strip away all the extra so that we can reevaluate the atmosphere we have at home, and to see how we can make that better. We have noticed how much technology we use on a daily basis. (spoiler alert : TOO MUCH!) We aren’t investing in what matters most as much as we should be. The kids are somewhat obsessed with their iPads, especially Tristan, and that bothers us a little bit. I know he likes to “zone out” and do something mindless sometimes, but we are going to try and switch that time away from his iPad and in to something more family oriented / playful. He used to build and build and build on his lego’s.. and now he’d rather have his TV on or be playing on his iPad.. and that’s going to change.
As parents, Shelby and I not perfect. We play on our phones way too much as well. That’s going to change, too. Together we have come up with a plan to strip away the electronics, and replace that with family time or reading or playing. This is actually the way things used to be in our family, and I know that was a happier time for us all.
I know I will be able to elaborate on this more later, especially as we dive in to this new “plan” and see how it works and what we need to tweak. I do know that I’m so excited and I’m really looking forward to investing in our family in a positive way. I can’t wait to have fun as a family and unplug from the drama that is social media (for myself) and for my kids to use their little brains more. I’m not leaving social media all together, but when we are together as a family, they are my priority and I won’t be glued to my phone anytime it dings.
I look forward to sharing more about this as we go along!
