When we lived in Hawaii we had this “family fun routine” that the kids and I would follow. I LOVED IT! Everyday we had a certain thing we would do, and we got in the routine of doing those things on those days, and it gave us something to look forward to! On the weekends we tried to do something fun as a family, kind of act like we were on vacation, and I have some of the best memories from those family fun days!
Family fun days are something I’d like to incorporate back in to our life routine. Over the last year we have gotten really bogged down with school and homework and work and internships and just life.. and we are overdue for some fun.
Throughout the week I’d like to do some fun things with the kids. Some friends of mine do something similar to this. On Friday they always make a homemade pizza and have a movie night with the kids. The kids look forward to it and the parents look forward to it and it’s just something in their routine they make time for! Those are great memories! Someday when those sweet little ones are bigger and have families of their own, I guarantee they’re going to carry on this tradition with their own families. I just love that!
I think I’m going to plan something “fun” maybe 3 nights per week.. and then leave the other days open. I don’t want to over plan and be discouraged if those plans don’t work out! Monday and Friday are probably going to be set, but then we can pick one more night during the week to do something else, depending on what we are in the mood for! Some of the ideas I have rolling around in my mind are:
- Ice Cream Monday – this is something we did last summer and it was a huge hit!
- Family Game Night – the kids love playing board games lately
- Pizza & Movie Night – we would probably do this on Friday nights
- Arts & Crafts Night – we would just pick a seasonal craft to do.. for fun!
- Dinner at the Park – pick up something easy in a drive-thru and head to the park to eat and play
- Little Chef Night – we could let the boys plan and cook dinner one night for the girls, then switch it up the next time!
- Bonfire Night – when the weather warms up we can build a fire in our fire pit and cook hotdogs and s’mores
I know that life prevents us from doing family fun day every weekend, but hopefully at least one weekend per month we can find the time to do something special and fun and make some great memories with our kids. Our kids love going to the zoo, or the pool, or skating. Something fun and out of our normal routine!
One thing that Shelby and I have talked about doing this year is taking our kids out on “dates”. Probably once per month, or once every other month, we would take turns taking the kids out for one-on-one dates with us. For example, in January Tristan and I will go out on a date and Shelby and Kate will go out on a date. The next time we switch so that I take Kate and Shelby takes Tristan. This gives us some special one-on-one time with our kids, and it also gives them a chance to be the only one competing for our attention. We can let them plan the date, and just have a great time. I’m really looking forward to this!
In addition to planning some fun things, I need to break out the camera and document life a little bit! We have this really nice camera that I probably haven’t touched in a year. I’m looking forward to using it to capture some moments and memories this year!
